Church of San Matteo
Descrizione
The Church of San Matteo stands on the same site as the first church built at the end of the 13th century.
During the 17th century, the building was almost completely rebuilt, assuming its current three-nave structure, with columns in stone from Finale and a large decorated apse.
The façade, restored in the early 20th century, is enhanced by bas-reliefs by sculptor Antonio Brilla and classical architectural elements. Inside, important paintings from the 17th century are preserved, including canvases by Giuseppe Badaracco, which depict sacred episodes and also offer valuable testimony of the ancient settlement of Borghetto.
The church also houses wooden sculptures, a main altar in polychrome marbles from 1715, and a modern organ, inaugurated in 1996, which continues the long musical tradition of the building. A symbol of the religious and social life of the town, the Church of San Matteo represents one of the main historical and cultural landmarks of Borghetto Santo Spirito.
